Better Inside EP 40

Better Inside Newsletter

Salam Dosto!

Writing in the hot weather with sweat pouring down, I’m hoping this is just a rough moment and that things will cool down soon. But with climate change affecting us all, it's hard to be sure. When something bad happens, we usually think it’s just temporary and that things will get better soon. In psychology, this is called the "It’ll-Get-Worse-Before-It-Gets-Better" fallacy, similar to confirmation bias.

Imagine you’re the president of a country and have no idea how to run it. What do you do? You predict tough years ahead, ask your citizens to tighten their belts, and promise improvement after this difficult phase of cleansing, purification, and restructuring. When someone says things will get worse before they get better, understand that they might not grasp your current situation. We need to see where this "worse" will end.

The second bit of wisdom I learned this week is: "Even true stories are fairy tales." Let me make it simple with an example. (A) The King died and the queen died. (B) The King died, and the queen died of grief. Most people remember the second story more easily. Here, the two deaths aren’t just successive; they are emotionally linked. According to information theory, we should remember (A) better because it’s shorter. But our brains don’t work that way. From our own life stories to global events, we shape everything into meaningful stories. Whenever you hear a story, ask yourself: Who is the sender? What are their intentions? What are they hiding?

When I connected these concepts in my life, many unclear things became clear. I realized why I need to make my content more story-focused and identified areas in my life where the "It’ll-Get-Worse-Before-It-Gets-Better" fallacy applies. Take some time to reflect on these concepts in your life. Write a journal, and you’ll be amazed at how many issues you can solve with these ideas.

One new word I learned this week is “Amiability.” Amiability works better than bribery. Explanation: It’s the quality of having friendly manners.

I hope this is helpful to you. 🙂
