Better Inside EP 25

Better Inside Newsletter

Ahoy, Friends!

This week has been the best week of 2023 for me. I learned various things and visited some lucrative food locations. However, food is not my motivation since I'm not a foodie. My team leader Charlie, came from the UK to Karachi for work. I joined him to assist in his work, and it was a lovely journey. I met different people and saw how building rapport can boost confidence. Charlie's background is strong; he is a policy advocate and lawyer with a proven record of delivering change for the public good. I've learned valuable lessons about negotiating with people. Here are my key learnings so far:

  1. If someone offers you food, always join the table, even if you're full. This can help in building rapport through informal conversations, making you the main spotlight in the discussion.

  2. Always show courtesy to people, even if the opponent doesn't agree. Create a space in communication so that the other person can easily reach out to you on common ground.

  3. If you're thinking about pursuing work in the development sector or searching for a problem to secure funds, use the “Scale, Solvability, Neglectedness” method. For a full case study, use this link.

  4. Document everything you plan to discuss and communicate after meetings. Be ready to change strategy when needed and avoid too much improvisation in the plan.

  5. Never make assumptions about people. Try to see the situation from the other person's perspective. This method will help you connect with them more easily.

  6. Don't believe everything blindly when someone is sharing about themselves. Listen carefully to what they are saying, and always investigate the truth.

Daily Exercise: At the end of day, write down ✍️

  • The thoughts you had

  • The people you talked to

  • The activities you performed

You will be more aware of what gives you energy and what robs you of happiness. And you can do better the next day.

Love,

Ammar
